South East Asian Resource Action Center (SEARAC)
The South East Asian Resource Center was founded in 1979 as the Indochina Refugee Action Center (IRAC) to facilitate the relocation of Southeast Asian refugees into American society and the development of nonprofit organizations led by and for Southeast Asians. Our principal mission is to advance the interests of Southeast Asian Americans. We promote community empowerment and leadership development. We are an advocate and key representative for the diverse Southeast Asian American community. As a national organization, we serve as a coalition builder and leader, facilitator, mediator, representative, and coordinator. SEARAC is uniquely qualified to strengthen the capacity of ethnic networks, mutual assistance associations, and other community-based organizations.
SEARAC seeks to identify commonalities between the views of diverse Southeast Asian American populations, and to raise the voice of Southeast Asian groups and thereby strengthen our participation in the shaping of domestic and global policy. We are expanding our advocacy mandate to cover legislation and policies at the federal and state levels, such as those having to do with welfare reform and naturalization, that have powerful effects on Southeast Asian Americans. SEARAC also monitors and disseminates information on programs, policies, and legislation of interest and concern to Southeast Asian Americans, including information on education, health care, safety, economic development, and civil rights. We share much of this information through our widely respected newsletter.
