What is being done to combat health disparities?

The National Institutes of Health currently has several initiatives to eliminate health disparities:

  • Research initiatives include studies of environmental and occupational hazards affecting minorities.

  • The Office of Minority and Women's Health, a division of the Centers for Disease Control, works to ensure the health and well-being of minorities and underserved populations through research, training, and prevention programs.

  • The CDC is leading the Health People 2010 initiative, the goals of which include elimination of health disparities.

Furthermore, community-based and faith-based organizations are creating language specific and culturally competent health information to their respective communities. This effort has and will continue to guide APIA and especially Vietnamese Americans in the health care system.
